The recent new Microgaming software version (also known as Viper) has done away with the single-deck blackjack game. It is now double-deck.

The single-deck game had a near 99.9% return for players but the casino edge has increased to now return 99.6% with the introduction of the double-deck game. In general, the fewer the decks in blackjack, the better it is for the player.

The Lucky Nugget casino was one of the first with the new software.

Why is it better to have a single deck in online blackjack?
In a real casino you could count cards but I dont think that is possible in online casinos?

The reason single deck is better is that the cards that have been dealt in a hand influence the odds of the next cards in the hand more than with multiple or infinite deck games and it happens to favour the player more. For example, when a player is dealt two cards totalling 11 (they would both be non-tens if they total 11), there would be proportionally more tens left in a single deck game than in a multiple deck game. This would give an advantage doubling in these situations. Another advantage of single deck is a greater chance of receiving a blackjack. Also, multiple decks bust less often (more likely to get a string of the low cards such as 3,3,3,3,3, etc. which can be impossible with single deck) but this is more advantageous to the dealer than the player because the dealer has to hit 16 or less all the time.

Going to 2 decks would give an extra ~0.35 casino edge, and it gets worse up to about 0.6 with 8 or more decks where the shoe starts resembling an infinite deck (where there is an equal chance for each card and dealt cards don't affect the outcome of the next). These figures are true whether the shoe is shuffled after each hand or not because these figures assume no card counting, just normal basic strategy.

A game where the cards are shuffled after each card is dealt (including the dealt card in the shuffle) is the same as an infinite deck and isn't good for the player. Lasseters online casino does this claiming it's from a single deck but the number of decks wouldn't matter if shuffled after each card dealt. Most online casinos shuffle after each hand though.

The single deck game is back with the latest Microgaming software (it's called 'classic' blackjack). The 'autoplay' mode is strangely unavailable for it but it's available for the other blackjack variations.

Hi. I'm pretty sure most of the newer Viper versions have what they call 'Classic Blackjack' available. It is the same as the original single deck European game. There is no autoplay for it though. An example is Vegas Villa casino (it's not recommended that you play there).

There are still some Microgaming casinos that haven't upgraded their software yet. 32Red wasn't Viper last time I checked but US residents can't play there anymore.
