I enjoyed reading this article on the history of lotteries. I was reminded of another historical lottery that they didn't mention in this article, one from literary history. Does anyone remember reading a short story called "The Lottery", by Shirley Jackson? We had to read it in high school, and I could never forget it. I doubt many people can. I half expected them to mention it in this article. In fact, I was compelled to go find it and read it again... if anyone else would like to read it, I found a copy of it online on this page:

It's fairly short, several pages long is all, very easy to read... and I think you'll be glad you read it, whether it's the first time to read it or not. I won't spoil it by giving anything away, but like I said, I doubt many people who read it ever forget it. Just thought I'd share! |
